We’ve always heard “Don’t believe everything you hear” and the current version is “Don’t believe everything you see on social media!”There is so much bullshit out there whether it’s false facts, people’s opinions or simply the pictures and captions you read believing that their lives are all rainbows and vacations and smiles. While it’s difficult to not get sucked into believing what’s in front of your eyes, you have to remember that people are posting the highlights of what they want you to see in order to create the illusion they want you to believe. The pics are part of the story but they certainly aren’t the whole story. You have to remember the filters that alter the pics, the angles that people know how to put themselves into and the blood, sweat and tears that happened before, during and after the shot was taken. Nobody’s life is perfect, not theirs, not mine, not yours. Just like a politician who has an agenda to push, or a news story that has an angle to expose, so are the stories you see on all the various social media platforms. Reading one page of a book won’t tell you the whole story and neither will seeing a snapshot of a moment that was perfectly curated for your viewing. We all live in the real world and the real world is full of flaws, spots, scars and cellulite.Where you see posted smiles, there are also unposted tears. Where you see posted success, there’s also unposted effort, hard work and sacrifice. Just a reminder about keeping it real. Those beautiful moments exist but they are only part of the story. Be careful of the fantasies you create and the stories you complete after only seeing one tiny piece of the story. Just like in The Wizard of Oz, there’s so much more happening behind the curtain.
