Own your shit. It’s as simple as that. Stop blaming. Stop minimizing. Stop making excuses as to why you did what you did or said what you said. Just own it, acknowledge the effects it had on those around you and genuinely apologize for your actions. Anything less than those three components and it’s not a worthy apology. One who deflects and makes excuses, isn’t truly apologetic for the damage they caused. Perhaps their intention wasn’t to damage, but damage was done nonetheless. The apology is not about the intention but instead it’s about the outcome. Take responsibility for your choices, your actions and the impact you make on the world around you. Apologies are a necessary healing tool if honest ownership is taken, validation of others’ feelings is given and a genuine sense of remorse for causing harm is felt.
