It’s not always easy to do, in fact it can be pretty difficult! Too often we are negatively affected by the people and situations around us. It takes a serious practice in mindfulness to keep your energy separate from that around you. Perhaps it feels impossible to not let others affect you. For now, start to practice recognizing how others are affecting you and make that conscious choice to let go of their energy. Everyone has something they are struggling with and unfortunately some people like to take others down with them as they spiral. They can do this by projecting their anger and negativity onto you. It’s your choice whether or not you want to carry their energy. Choose not to take it on as it really doesn’t belong to you. We’ve gotten into the nasty habit of absorbing the energy that is thrown at us and it begins to seep in and find a home inside. It’s toxic energy and it’s not ours. Remind yourself that it doesn’t belong to you. Choose to release it. If you can, create some space between you and that person or event so that you aren’t consumed with that toxic energy. Breathe, connect with your body and let it go. It’s a practice but the more you do it, the more joy and inner peace you will find.
